Re:        NAR Communications with Members and the Media

Dear Fellow REALTOR®,

The following email is a response we recently sent to one of our state REALTOR® associations, it includes details and information that is valuable to all NAR members.   Please take a moment to review this email to see how NAR is communicating with you and the national media.

It is critical for NAR to be both realistic and optimistic concerning the current state of the real estate market.  As you can imagine, that can be a difficult balance to strike, especially with market conditions changing on a day-to-day basis.  Sometimes, NAR is viewed as a “cheerleader” for the real estate industry.  That’s not inappropriate, considering we are “The Voice for Real Estate”.  The vast majority of our membership feels strongly that we must do more to counter the overwhelming attention that the news media give to negative national housing market trends and help bring consumers back into the market.  That is, in fact, what our ongoing messages and Public Awareness Campaign are designed to do.

The data NAR reports is clear and unaltered.   Real estate is a local business, so it’s important to stress that many markets are not experiencing the same conditions.   There will always be markets that are slow and others that are strong.  We report both aspects in an open and honest manner, and we encourage the media to look beyond national trends.  That’s our job as the National Association of REALTORS®.

The national media is more interested than ever in what we have to say.  They pack our Washington, DC, office each month to find out the latest existing home sales data and our numbers move the global markets.   Last year, NAR Chief Economist Lawrence Yun was judged as one of the top 5 economist’s in the country by USA Today – the only housing economist in the country to be recognized.

The market outlook and commentaries Lawrence and his team prepare are balanced and accurate, highlighting what is currently happening in the real estate industry.  I encourage you to take some time and read some of these commentaries using the link below:

Regarding our communications on the stimulus package, NAR has taken an active role in communicating directly with our members.  However, we need your help to let lawmakers know the strength and collective power of the REALTOR® family.   Our last all member “Call to Action” on the stimulus package recorded only an 8.7% response nationwide.  Whatever you can do to raise the response rates would really be helpful.

Finally, I want to direct your attention to some recent communications that showcase how “in touch” members of NAR Leadership are with REALTORS®.  The Voices of Real Estate blog on Realtor.org is the brainchild of 2008 NAR President Dick Gaylord, who wanted a way to communicate directly with members on a regular basis.  Contrary to certain opinions, each member of the Leadership Team writes their own blog entries.  The opinions expressed in our entries represent our personal thoughts.

Here are a few examples that we think you might find particularly interesting:

Ohio REALTORS® Don’t Blink (Steve Brown)

As you’ll see from these entries, we are in touch with agents in the field every day.   None of us is shy about addressing tough questions or issues.   We ask that you continue to help us improve in all areas – not only by sharing your concerns, but also by supporting our communications and helping to get these messages out to the market.

Thank you for taking the time to review this email.  NAR is “The Voice for Real Estate” and is here to support you.

Sincerely,

Charles McMillan Signature
